One will carry about 60yds say a LW and risk not carrying the ridge ending up even further from the hole after rolling down a slope. Or the club that carries 65yds say GW can get me on top of the ridge in the general area of the hole. My main point was having known those two distances prior to facing the shot, I am more comfortable in making my selection for the shot at that time.
In my example I would choose my GW knowing that making a good swing would carry the ridge, my main goal, and that if struck really well I'd be close and if struck not so well at least I'm putting from on top the ridge. I have no idea how far any of the my clubs rolls after they land because that changes on the condition of the courses but i do know all of my carry distances to within 5 yards all the way up to my 3 wood. Pa Jayhawk said:. I guess you could say over the course of the year I became a very lucky player on a consistent basis Practice breed consistency, no matter what the task. As mentioned in the above part, I think carry is more important, although understanding the affect the club will have on roll is important as well.
I guess my question would be what disadvantage is there to not understanding how a club will react in a neutral situation. Kinda like putting on different speed greens. The quality, weighting, loft, and other club factors will also play an important part. One has to become intimate with each club and understand their potential and effectiveness based on your style and swing.
This will take some time and effort. Other factors such as the ball used, the course condition and the weather, particularly the dreaded wind, will also have an impact on distance. This video will give you some insight into the value of understanding your average distance for each club in your bag.
On average, men hit further than women so we do make a distinction. There are obviously exceptions and men are often outdriven by skilled lady golfers.
The averages vary according to which report or study you look at but this is the approximate average for each club. It is important to note that these average distances relate to golfers with some experience so beginners are not likely to achieve these averages.
These days, very few golfers, including many of the pros, do not use the longer irons. Many use a hybrid in place of the 2, 3 and 4 irons. The average distance should be similar but you should have more confidence at address, greater consistency, and better accuracy. As a result, your average shot with a hybrid is likely to be longer than with an iron.
Hybrids tend to come in a slightly wider range of lofts and this will obviously impact the distance so take this into account when making distance calculations.
