If you need to upgrade the version of the grub package for example if this problem was caused by a bug which is now fixed :. Now that you have the right grub version, run the following with the right device name for your machine :. The method I use is to boot another copy of Grub from somewhere bootable CD, USB stick, or network boot -- it's easy to boot grub from any of these.
Then, from the prompt, something like:. By now your system is ready to boot. To avoid network clash, unplug the network cable of the PM, or shut it down. If anyone knows about this and can add some info to this guide, that would be much appreciated! So update that kernel while still in de chroot to a 2. I skipped a couple of the first steps and used a bare metal restore in the vm mkcdrec — an excellent tool and also used a knoppix cd rather than ubuntu. The target was a vm under Parallels rather than vmware so all in all I was rather surprised it all worked.
In my case grub was not updated properly to reflect the new architecture. This bit me when the kernel on Debian was updated with a security update and the boot reverted to the old hardware type. I have a few notes:. I had to do this for 2. I experienced this with Red Hat 8.
I had to actually use and old Red Hat 8. I experienced this on my Red Hat 8. Removed that and all was well. Your email address will not be published. There is one catch though. The way around this is to install GRUB on both drivers. You can install GRUB on the second drive to make it bootable.
You can not move the second drive into the first drive's slot. You may also have to modify the BIOS so that it will look for the boot record on the second hard drive. Hope this helps. Post by jjx » amazing I will try it tomorrow morning. Post by jjx » I am still facing problems. Firstly, i tried to install debian "etch". Still no sucess. When i try to partion the hdd option "Guided partition" and then "manually edit partitions" installer returns to "Partition disks" without finding any disks.
Installing both 2. Still doesnt find the hdd. Again by installing both 2. Because i cant see the hdd i cant install to the one hdd and use sofwtare raid. I am trying to install etch net install beta 2 on an xSeries now rebranded x server and i am coming across exactly the same sort of problems as the post above, basicly the disks are not getting detected by the installer. The kernel 2. Another problem is that i cannot work out how disable the serveraid card in the bios. In my case revealed new options in the bios Find your hostraid chipset and check if is supported.
Post by jjx » i think drivers will be added in the release of debian testing next month. Maybe is easier to w8. I cant for the life of me work out how to get this kernel into an installer I dont really wanna just let this daft ibm box sit here for a month as it is a work machine that im meant to get up and running asap.
Where did you find out the drivers may be added next month? If i can coroborate that then hopefully i will be able to let the box just sit there until its released.
