Top interventional radiology fellowship programs

The Johns Hopkins Interventional Radiology Fellowship Program is one of the largest training programs in both scope and numbers of procedures. Johns Hopkins has a large volume of dedicated inpatient IR admissions, a large IR clinic volume of — patients each month who are seen in a surgical outpatient clinic, and a busy consultative service managed by an IR fellow.

Our interventional radiology division has close working relationships with other clinical services, including shared participation and a major role in the multidisciplinary liver clinic, multidisciplinary fibroid clinic and multidisciplinary HHT center. We have dedicated interventional suite procedure space, a dedicated IR admission service and an IR clinic five days a week.

All pediatric IR experience is integrated into the daily IR work for fellows. Pediatric training does not require travel to another hospital. Due to ongoing changes in the health care landscape and job market forces, the IR fellowship transitioned to a one-year program in , which is its current duration. However, the need for longer and more structured, focused training in IR was recognized by the greater IR community.

The legacy of commitment to IR training evolution will culminate in a new IR residency at Johns Hopkins in , with more information to follow. Materials and methods: A question anonymous survey was distributed via email to all 78 program directors PDs of United States IR residency programs.

The survey included information about the presence or absence of a formal mentorship program at their institution, how the program functions, potential barriers to implementation, and future plans for mentorship. And, most likely, it will not be many of those stent placements in the neck or embolization of the liver. Most techniques are much more mundane. You will probably have done a lot more PICC lines and Portacaths than any high tech complex procedure out there.

But, more likely than not, you will need to wear a regular lead uniform most of the time. And, unless you maintain yourself in excellent shape, many lead garments tend to cause back and muscle pain. In fact, at a certain age, it is not uncommon for many interventionalists to switch to a DR specialty because of the wear and tear on their bodies.

Most new radiology residents do not realize the long term consequences of wearing a heavy uniform until they hear the complaints of their mentors. I think many residents have not done their research and have fallen for all the hype. Now, call me crazy, but I believe that one of two things may happen since residents are signing up early before they get to know the specialty.

Only time will tell. I hope I am wrong! I have been practicing as the associate radiology residency director at Saint Barnabas Medical Center since Through many years of on-the-job training, I have gained significant insight regarding all things radiology resident related. This makes interventional radiology a Not Friendly field for osteopathic students.

Because there are 0. The average matched U. They had 5. That makes this specialty on where the number of publications needed is High. The mean U. Step 1 score for matched medical students in interventional radiology was The overall competitiveness level of interventional radiology is High for a U. Compared to other residencies, interventional radiology has a Long training length. As far as lifestyle, interventional radiologists generally have a Medium stress lifestyle.

Of course, lifestyle is very subjective and if you love what you do, it does not matter! And if you hate what you do, it can still be rough no matter what. In medicine, you should find the specialty that makes you enjoy your everyday interactions with patients, staff and colleagues. Academic versus private practice as well as location also play a large role in physician compensation.
